Four separate areas of study make up a full CompTIA A+; you’re qualified as an achiever in A+ when you’ve achieved certifications for just two specialist areas. This is why it’s usual for colleges to only teach 2 specialised areas. In fact you will need the information on each subject as many positions will require an understanding of the whole A+ program. Don’t feel pressured to take all four exams, but it seems common sense that you at least have a working knowledge of every area.

CompTIA A+ consists of 4 training sections; you’re considered A+ competent when you’ve passed the test for half of them. This is the reason that the majority of training establishments only have two of the courses on their syllabus. In reality you’re advised to have the information on each subject as industry will demand an understanding of the whole A+ program. You don’t have to take all four exams, but we would recommend you study for all four areas.

If it’s Cisco training you’re after, but you’ve no practical experience with routers or switches, then you’ll need a CCNA course. This teaches you the knowledge you need to understand routers. Vast numbers of routers make up the internet, and big organisations with multiple departments and sites also utilise routers to allow their networks to keep in touch.
